Selection, or differential reproductive success among individuals due to trait differences, is the most reasonable ultimate explanation for rape in humans. Presumably, all evolution leading to adaptation [FN26] has been driven by inter-individual selection, and not by intergroup selection. Evidence for this is vast, and is seen in the functional designs of adaptations. Adaptations' benefactors are individuals who bear them and the genes that code for them. There is no example of adaptation that has evolved because it promotes group survival or reproductive success. If group success is promoted by adaptation, it is merely a by-product, and not the reason the adaptation evolved.

This post was co-authored by Valerie Aurora and Leigh Honeywell and cross-posted on both of our blogs. It was also republished on Quartz. We developed the Al Capone Theory over several years of researching and recording racism and sexism in computer security , open source software , venture capital , and other parts of the tech industry. As you may already know, Al Capone was a famous Prohibition-era bootlegger who, among other things, ordered murders to expand his massively successful alcohol smuggling business.

Barriers to Healthcare Provision for Victims of Sexual Assault: A Grounded Theory Study
According to a survey conducted by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, a staggering 99 percent of Egyptian women surveyed said they had experienced some form of sexual harassment. Examining how the act of sexual harassment is perceived by male harassers, Hani Henry, associate professor of psychology and chair of the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology and Egyptology, uses feminist theory to provide a deeper understanding of sexual harassment, looking at it as sexist — rather than a sexual — act. For the study, Henry employs a qualitative approach that uses feminist theory to explain incidents of sexual harassment by self-professed sexual harassers. Conducting in-depth interviews with nine male participants from the streets of Cairo and Giza, five major themes emerged, whereby participants gave their justifications for engaging in sexual harassment.
Sexism is alive and well in sexual assault research, but this time men are the target. A new study conducted by researchers at Florida Atlantic University and Sam Houston State University debunks a long-standing theory that sexual assault isn't as emotionally traumatizing for men as it is for women and that it doesn't result in similar emotional impacts, especially when it comes to depression. Sexual assault is unwanted sexual contact -- including rape -- and is a traumatizing event linked to numerous mental health consequences associated with negative outcomes such as depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, fear, anxiety, alcohol dependence, use of illicit substances, suicidal ideation, and attempted suicide. While there is extensive research on the collateral consequences experienced by females, almost no research exists on how sexual violence affects adult, non-incarcerated males or how it affects them as compared to females.
